An Engler distillation flask is a specialized glassware used in the petroleum industry for determining the viscosity of petroleum products. It is named after its inventor, the German engineer and chemist Wilhelm Engler. The flask has a specific design that allows for precise temperature control and vaporization of the sample. It consists of a cylindrical body with a calibrated neck and a sidearm for attaching a condenser. The sample is heated in the flask, and the temperature at which a specified volume of the sample vaporizes is measured. This information is used to calculate the Engler viscosity, which is a measure of the flow characteristics of petroleum products.
